Both Mother Nature and Tecumseh Rain on Pioneer’s Senior Night

Pioneer hosted unbeaten Tecumseh this past Friday night for their final home game and a celebration of the eight seniors on the 2018 Pioneer Men’s Varsity team. The senior class includes co-captain Nathan Yuhas, Zane Jones, co-captain Jack Miling, James Leonard, Zain Souweidane, co-captain Jack Reid, Nathan Sadlier, and co-captain Andrew Mills. Pioneer fell behind in the first quarter but tied up the game going into halftime. But Tecumseh had a big second half, scoring seven to Pioneer’s one goal. Tecumseh won by a final score of 14 to 7.

The first quarter scoring began when Tecumseh Junior Dylan Day scored his first of six goals in the game. His second came less than a minute later. And at 6:07 left in the first quarter Dylan Day earned himself a hat trick with his third goal. Pioneer cut into the lead when Senior Nathan Yuhas centered himself up fourteen yards out from the goal and let lose a blast that shook the water from the back of the net. Tecumseh came back with two more goals before the end of the quarter. Senior Ricky Amador scored his first of four goals in the game, then Dylan Day got his fourth goal of the quarter. At the end of the first quarter it was Pioneer 1 and Tecumseh 5.

Pioneer played their best lacrosse in the second quarter. They started out the quarter with four goals in a row. Senior Jack Reid come down the goal line on the near side, fought his way around a defender and fired in his first goal of the game. He followed that up with two more unassisted goals, then set up an assist to Sophomore Nixon Holley for the fourth goal. Pioneer had tied the game up at five, but the tie was short-lived as fifteen seconds later Amador scored again to put Tecumseh in the lead. But Pioneer was not done. With just ten seconds left in the quarter Holley again took a Reid pass and buried it to tie the game. At the end of the second quarter it was Pioneer 6 and Tecumseh 6.

Tecumseh came out of half time fired up. Amador scored just a scant twelve seconds into the third quarter. Dylan Day follow that up with another goal a little more than a minute later. And twenty-six seconds later Amador rifled home another goal. In less than two minutes into the third quarter Pioneer went from tied, to three down. Pioneer tried to claw back as Reid took a pass from Senior Zane Jones and let loose for his fourth goal, but it would be the last Pioneer scored that evening. Amador scored again, and then Freshman Blake Day got his first goal of the game. At the end of the third quarter, it was Pioneer 7 and Tecumseh 11.

Tecumseh again started strong in the fourth quarter, as they started with possession and Dylan Day scored his sixth goal, this time just seven seconds into the period. Senior Drake Ringer scored his first goal on a pass from Blake Day. Then the final tally came from Sophomore Marcus Dennis with a little under four minutes left. The final score was Pioneer 7 and Tecumseh 14

Pioneer had three more shots on goal, shooting 35 to Tecumseh’s 32. But Tecumseh dominated the faceoffs, winning 24 to Pioneer’s 6. The ground ball battle was close, but Tecumseh won that as well, 24 to 20.
