The Pioneer Men’s Varsity Lacrosse team visited River Bank Stadium to play SEC opponent Huron High School. Though the game was close throughout the first quarter, Pioneer had a huge second quarter and never looked back. Sixteen different Pioneer players made their mark in the score book, led by four goals and two assists for Senior Jack Reid. Pioneer won by a final score of 19 – 3.

Huron started the scoring in the first quarter when Junior Taka Fetters scored just 1:52 into the game. Pioneer answered by with a three-goal run. First Reid found Sophomore Nixon Holley on the far side of the goal just five yards out, Holley buried the shot and tied the game. Then Reid scored two goals unassisted to put Pioneer ahead by two. Huron struck back when Sophomore Patrick Tibbets scored off a pass from Fetters and it was a one goal game. But that was as close as it would get. Pioneer pushed their lead to two when Reid scored again, this time assisted by Holley. At the end of the first quarter it was Pioneer 4 and Huron 2.

Pioneer broke open the game in the second quarter, scoring eight unanswered goals, and taking a nine-goal run into half time. Holley scored again, this time assisted by Junior David Russman. Then Reid scored his fourth of the game. That was followed by Senior Zain Souweidane rocketing in a goal with the long stick off a turn over. Freshman Heath Monsma, who had the game-winning goal for the JV team last Saturday, got his first score with the varsity team. Then Doyle snagged Reid’s second assist and ripped it into the net. Russman followed that up with his first of two goals in the game. The half ended with two excellent defenders showing off their offensive skills when Senior Andrew Mills grab the short stick, took a pass from Freshman Owen Lutz, and rifled in a goal. Then Junior Justin Marchetti stretched the net with a goal of his own two minutes before half time. At the end of the second quarter it was Pioneer 12 and Huron 2.

The nine-goal run became a thirteen-goal run in the third quarter. Lutz added a goal to his assist just twenty-three seconds into the quarter. Senior Zane Jones got into the mix with a goal. Then Lutz scored his second goal of the game off a pass from Junior Sungyu Kim. Russman had his second of the game to finish off the goal run. With a minute and seven seconds to go in the third, Tibbets scored his second goal for Huron. At the end of the third it was Pioneer 16 and Huron 3.

The fourth quarter scoring started with Junior Gabriel Rosenberg setting up Junior Casey Bremer for the goal. The game finished with two more JV call-ups getting their first varsity goals. Freshman Adam Karibian scored unassisted and Sophomore Joshua Zimdars blasted home a shot set up by a Junior David Rudberg pass.

The shots on goal were starkly in Pioneer’s favor, as they had 52 to Hurons 4. Pioneer took 21 faceoffs to Huron’s 6. And Pioneer won the groundball battle 35 to 16.
