Ann Arbor, MI. The Pioneers raced out to a 3-0 lead over Ann Arbor Huron in the consolation game of the Dan Jilek Tournament on Friday and coasted to an easy 8-1 win. Gaiden Heatley paced the Pioneers with three goals and an assist while Wyatt Bullinger followed close behind with two goals and two assists of his own.
Pioneer skaters were dominant offensively throughout the contest, peppering Huron netminder Ethan St. Pierre with 19 shots in the 1st period, 21 in the 2nd period, and 22 in the third period. The out-manned River Rats mustered just 14 shots in the entire contest. Junior Will Downer accounted for Huron’s lone goal late in the 2nd period, but by that time Pioneer had already taken a commanding 4-1 lead and the outcome was all but assured. Any thoughts the Rats may have had about mounting a comeback were quickly extinguished when Junior Defenseman Nolan Dresch scored an unassisted goal that extended Pioneer’s lead to 5-1 less than a minute into the 3rd period.
Huron players were sent to penalty box three times and Pioneer’s special teams exacted a heavy price, converting on 2 of 3 power play opportunities. Pioneer returns to regular season play on Wednesday January 10th when they host Dearborn at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube. Game time is 7:30 PM.
