2012 Athletic Alumna Award

Jan Baublis graduated from Pioneer High School in 1980.  She was a member of the women’s swim team for four years and captain her senior year.  Jan was State Champion in the 100 yard backstroke in both 1978 and 1979, as well as State Record Holder for the same event.  She was a four-time State Runner Up in the 200 yard individual medley.  Jan’s senior year marked Pioneer’s first women’s State Championship Team.  Jan was named a Detroit News Athlete of the Month in both 1978 and 1979.  She was 1980 Junior Olympic Champion in the 100 yard backstroke and a member of the National Champion 200 yard medley relay which set a record in that event.  Jan swam for Indiana University where the team won the Big Ten Championship her freshman year.  Jan was Big Ten Runner Up in the 100 and 200 yard backstroke events, and was an NCAA championship participant in both events her junior and senior years.  Jan says that Pioneer athletics helped her learn how to be a graceful winner, but more importantly, how to deal with disappointment, frustration, and hurt.  “I learned that my efforts directly influence success, and that life is amazing when you have a team behind you.”
